 Selection by values

The COVID pandemic has accelerated many of the changes that were occurring in the labor market. Consumers increasingly demand companies that are more committed to the environment, to the welfare of their workers, to promoting a balance between personal and professional life, and to social causes. It has been socially responsible companies with a clear purpose that have truly emerged strengthened from this situation.

We are in a context of many changes, and the human resource management areas of companies must lead the process of transforming their teams to adapt. One of the fundamental points is personnel selection. It will be key for companies to be able to hire while minimizing mistakes, accurately identifying the characteristics of vacancies, and rigorously analyzing the potential candidates they interview.

Traditionally, the personnel selection process has been based on an assessment of the competencies and experience of each candidate, leaving other extremely important issues such as values, fit with the organization's culture, and potential in the background.

Selection by values allows understanding what makes a person truly authentic and unique: their values, their purpose, and their aspirations. Values guide us in our day-to-day decisions and actions, and we must be able to identify them to know if the candidates are truly aligned with the organization and its culture.

The fit between a person's values and those of the organization leads to a greater sense of belonging, more motivation, and increased team performance.

Consequently, values are a strategic tool for change to transform companies and their workers into aligned and committed organisms towards a common purpose. Human resource management departments must take a further step in personnel selection, to ensure the hiring of candidates who, in addition to competencies and professional experience, share the purpose and culture of the organization.
